Hello, this is hiroko.

Today I would like to introduce "Setsubun".

Originally it was a traditional event on February 3rd, but since February 3rd is the spring equinox this year, it is one day earlier for the first time in 124 years.

(What is Setsubun?)

It will be the day before the spring equinox. Then, we will hold an event to dispel evil spirits. While sprinkling roasted soybeans on the outside, there are many places to shout "Oni is outside, Fuku is inside". This will drive away the evil. I eat soybeans for the number of years. This demon is not really a human being, but three anxieties that all human beings have, and it is said that they represent attachment, hatred, and ignorance.

At temples and shrines, beans are often planted grandly, but this year many of them have been canceled due to the new coronavirus. In the Kansai region, holly is decorated with sardine heads to get rid of evil spirits. I also eat grilled sardines. Originally, there was a custom in Kansai that it was auspicious to eat thick sushi rolls toward Ehomaki, but it spread all over the country around 2000, and even in Tokyo, thick sushi rolls are often eaten.

(Memories of childhood)

I used to live in Nara prefecture. And at Kofuku-ji, an event called a demon chasing ceremony is held on Setsubun day, and Fuku beans are thrown to worshipers. At the same time, he threw a rubber ball and my dad caught some of them, which is a very nostalgic memory.

(How to spend this year's Setsubun)

For the last few years, I have decided to make my own thick sushi rolls. I only wind the sushi a few times a year, so it doesn't get much better, but it's one of the pleasures.

This year too, we were able to make some delicious rolls. I checked Ehomaki's "slightly south-southeast" on my smartphone. It is an application called "Ehomaki Compass". It was fun to see the Omikuji.

Also, I don't sow beans because I don't have a garden, but I bought roasted soybeans and ate them for the number of years. I bought Aim this year, so I baked it and ate it.

After all, if you buy ingredients in Japan, you can get various things at a reasonable price. This year's Setsubun was fulfilling and I was very satisfied.
